Adam’s ‘Dig It’ Wish
10-year-old Adam traded his toolbelt for the driver's seat of a digger as he wished to experience the ‘Dig IT’ excavator park in Queensland.
Can you dig it? Adam can!
Growing up on a dairy farm is what has inspired Adam’s passion for the outdoors, tools, and big machinery, like the family tractor, which his Aunty is teaching him to drive. So, when Adam saw an advertisement for the ‘Dig It’ activity he knew that his wish would be “To ‘Dig IT’ at Thunderbird Park”.
At home, Adam has his own tool collection which he purchased by selling tomatoes from his veggie patch. He loves using his tools for exploration and more importantly to demolish things and then put them back together again.
Trading his tool collection for a real-life digger and bulldozer, Adam had his wish to experience “Dig IT” at Thunderbird Park earlier this month – where he dug, demolished, drove machinery, fossicked for crystals, and camped with his whole family. Adam’s favourite activities all in one weekend!
Rock-solid family bond
What does Adam love even more than operating a digger? His family! Adam underwent treatment for his central nervous system sarcoma during COVID-19, which meant being separated from his family. Adam’s mum, Lisa, mentioned that it was a really tough time for everyone, and this is why Adam loves being around his whole family (including his two older brothers and sister) as much as he can now.
“[During Adam’s treatment] we sort of just kept doing what we needed to do to get by [as a family’, but it also meant we all went in separate directions. This is our first proper holiday in a long time, and we have had a lot of family fun together.”
“Adam’s diagnosis rocked us a lot, as it would with any family. No one expects to hear that there’s a mass on your child's brain. It’s been a wakeup call to our family, not to work too hard, to stop and smell the roses – and to enjoy our time together!”
