Wish makes paw-fect pals
Fraser, 6, wished for “a black baby dog named Ziggy”. If you love puppies and wishes coming true, then you’ll love this update from his mum!
According to mum Beth, Fraser and Ziggy spent their first day together tearing around the garden before both boys were worn out and needed a nap.
Fraser is now in remission from rhabdomyosarcoma, and his wish has been a big part of the recovery process, as his family share in this heartfelt letter…
Where to start with what this whole experience has meant to our family?
We first started talking about a wish just after Fraser had surgery. He’d already had three months of chemotherapy, and there was at least a few more months of treatment to go.
Being able to talk about a wish gave us all something to hang on to. Fraser could talk about something real that was going to happen when he'd finished treatment, and in doing so the end seemed nearer somehow.
As a parent, the wish felt like something I could do, when everything else was in the hands of the doctors.
Fraser’s wish was above and beyond what we could have imagined. Our morning with the dog squad and police horses will be something we will all remember forever; the scavenger hunt for Ziggy's goodies built excitement and was such a clever way to engage Fraser in shopping (which he normally hates – I might actually replicate that for the weekly shop!); and the day we picked Ziggy up was just incredibly special from start to finish.
There were so many wonderful little touches and overwhelming kindness from everyone around us. I also loved how you helped make his brothers Sam and Harry part of the experience too.
At the moment Fraser has no evidence of disease which is a great place to be. However, he will have to have scans and tests for the rest of his life, and the effects of his cancer and treatment mean that he may face more surgery as he grows.
There will be some activities that he might not be able to do in future, but having Ziggy means that he always has a buddy to come home to.
We can't wait to see what this awesome pair get up to in the years to come!
Our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in bringing Fraser's wish to life.
