James’ fishing adventure

James is 15 and has a rare condition known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome. He’s endured a lot in his 15 years, having his first open-heart surgery when he was just two days old, and more than 25 surgeries since.

James is a full-blown fishing addict, so his cherished wish had to involve fishing! One day while he was watching an episode of Mark Berg’s Fishing Addiction, James exclaimed, “That’s it! I wish to go fishing with Bergie – nothing else could ever come close!”

The adventure of a lifetime

In the trip of a lifetime, James and his family flew to Darwin from their home in Western Australia and spent an unforgettable weekend fishing and filming an episode of the show with Mark and his crew. According to mum Joanne, the experience was incredible.

“What a dream come true for James,” she shares. “It was amazing to see him forget about having a life-threatening medical condition and just enjoy being the centre of attention, doing what he loves.”

The lasting impact of James' wish

“It’s done wonders for James’ confidence,” explains his mum. “It’s taught him fishing skills that he can continue to build on for life – he’s already been putting his new skills into practice at every opportunity since returning home.

“Plus, having the greatest adventure of his life made into a television episode is the icing on the cake!"

"Down the track, when times get tough with James’ health, he will always be able to look back and relive those wonderfully happy moments.”
