How it works

How it works

We make the cherished wishes of children and teenagers battling life-threatening medical conditions come true. A wish is vital. We carefully design each one to build anticipation and resilience to help a child in the fight for their health. Wishes give seriously ill kids hope for the future, strength to face the challenges of their illness and joy from their incredible wish experience.

How we make wishes come true

From the anticipation, to the wish itself, and the memories that it creates – each unique wish journey provides a welcome diversion for children and teenagers going through difficult medical treatments. A wish can also be a positive experience for families in challenging times. A child may wish for anything, and we’ll do everything we possibly can to make it happen.

Applying for a wish

To apply for a wish, please fill in an application form and send it back to us. There are a few options for how you can do this outlined on the form. Children may fill out the form themselves however it must also be signed by a parent or legal guardian.

We'll let you know once we've received your application and will be in touch again once we've confirmed your child's eligibility. Our wonderful Make-A-Wish volunteers from a branch in your local community will then arrange to visit your child at a convenient time, introduce themselves to your child and your family, and start a conversation about what their cherished wish may be.

A cherished wish

Asking someone to make a wish for something incredibly special and meaningful to them can be a challenging question, and one that needs a lot of thought. Therefore, it's quite common for children to take some time to think of their one, true cherished wish. Our volunteers will encourage your child to take their time.

The wish journey

By the time your child's chosen a wish, their wish journey has already begun. Once we've tapped into their imagination to capture their true cherished wish, we'll take them on a wondrous journey of anticipation in the lead up to their wish coming true. We carefully design a unique wish journey for each child, to build resilience while igniting positivity and fight. So expect to hear from us regularly!

The impact of a wish

Our wonderful Wish Team work closely with our incredible volunteers to not only pull together all the elements required to make your child's wish come true, but also to make sure the wish comes true in exactly the way your child imagined it (or better!). We work meticulously to get this right so we can ensure your child experiences the positive impact of the healing power of a wish.

“He made it better in real life than it was in my mind!” - Daniel, 8, fighting spinal cell sarcoma, wished for an apple green surfboard.

The vast majority of families tell us they see noticeable, lasting improvements in their child's emotional and physical health as a result of their wish journey. As one wish mum told us,

'It was the turning point during his treatment'.

We'll be in touch with an optional survey for your child and family to complete about your wish experience. We also love to keep in contact by sending you regular communications about other wishes that have come true and what's happening at Make-A-Wish.
