A Message from Sally Bateman, CEO, Make-A-Wish Australia

For 35 years, Make-A-Wish has brought our community together to deliver hope and happiness for families who need it most.

During the COVID-19 crisis, we're keeping the thousands of people who make up the Make-A-Wish family in our thoughts - including our vulnerable wish kids, incredible volunteers and long-time supporters all over the country.

The harsh reality is that COVID-19 is continuing to impact us all. In line with recent Government restrictions, we've taken every possible measure to keep our community safe, and this has meant postponing most wishes between April and August. Many wishes involving travel, celebrities, public events and experiences are by their very nature on hold. Even as restrictions ease in line with Government and State-based stages, many wishes will continue to be on hold given the vulnerable nature of the children and families we support.

For our wish kids, that means Kobe can't live his dream to be like a Youtuber right now, Hannah can't experience the sights and sounds of Vivid Festival, and Cruz can't eat and sleep on a big train.

In good news, we have managed to safely grant some wishes since COVID-19 struck, including delivering Charlotte's fairy garden and Chloe's adorable puppy, Wish. Even in the toughest of times, it's encouraging to know these moments of pure happiness and joy are still possible.

Wishes are Waiting

We recently estimated that the COVID -19 crisis was affecting at least one wish every day in Australia. For our people and volunteers who are super passionate about delivering our mission, it's heartbreaking that we can't make more wishes come true over this period.

My commitment to every child is when it's safe to do so, all wishes will come true, and no child will miss out despite the challenges. At Make-A-Wish, we have always made the seemingly impossible possible, and we're not going to stop now. Our Wish team is working at top speed (remotely!) to ensure wish families are supported, and we can still find creative ways to bring smiles to our wish children's faces.

But as we know, this isn't just a health crisis we're facing - it's an incredibly tough economic climate too. The reality is we've seen a steep decline in our ability to fundraise since the COVID crisis. Key campaigns and events are on hold, and many supporters are unable to give as they normally would.

Now more than ever, we need your help.

While wishes are waiting due to COVID-19, sadly, childhood illness is not. In Australia today, the latest medical guidelines suggest more than 9,500 children have a life-threatening condition, while thousands more are born or diagnosed with serious illnesses each year.

However, the magic of Make-A-Wish has always been in the power of people and communities coming together to support sick kids when they need it most.

With 700 kids counting on us right now, we can still give the brightest of days to families who's situations won't ease when Government restrictions do.

Right now, every donation matters and every dollar counts.

On behalf of the children and families we serve, and everyone at Make-A-Wish Australia, we thank you for your ongoing support.

Wishes need your support now more than ever

Every dollar makes a life-changing difference to seriously ill kids across Australia.
