Who are we?

Who are we?

Each and every day, Make-A-Wish brings amazing people together to grant life-changing wishes for children with a critical illness. The wishes complement medical treatment, supporting families and empowering sick children with hope and joy when they need it most. And for everyone involved, wishes have a remarkable, uplifting and positive impact – well beyond the wish itself.

Here at Make-A-Wish Australia, our vision is to be Australia's most inspirational children's charity.

Our brand

Unique. Inspiring. Extraordinary.

All over the world, Make-A-Wish creates hope and joy at a time when it’s needed most for critically ill children, their families and communities. How we communicate that emotion is central to our brand – and how audiences respond.

Here at Make-A-Wish Australia, we stay true to our global brand by demonstrating our universal brand essence. We also look to bring a uniquely Australian perspective and tone of voice to life in our communications to better reach and engage local audiences.

How we speak

How we speak

At Make-A-Wish, all our brand communications focus on the joy and lasting impact of a wish – please note, we don’t use words like ‘terminal’, ‘suffer’, or ‘dying’ in our communications.

  • Make-A-Wish – our brand name always includes capitals and hyphens
  • Make-A-Wish Australia – please use our full name in the first or most prominent reference; after that, simply use ‘Make-A-Wish’
  • Please note - Make-A-Wish Foundation of Australia Ltd is our legal name only, we do not use the word 'Foundation’ in everyday comms
  • Our #WishForce describes the thousands of volunteers, business partners and everyday Australians who support Make-A-Wish and make wishes happen (also known as the Wish Force, Wishmakers and #wishmakers)
  • wish child is our preferred term for wish recipients; you may also say 'wish kids' in less formal communications
  • Wish Journey - our wishes aren't just one-offs, and Make-A-Wish Australia has led the world in adopting a five-stage Wish Journey that has a positive, lasting impact on the lives of sick children, their families and communities ('Wish Journey' is capitalised)

We describe our tone of voice as inspiring, imaginative, joyous and generous.

Alexander

Alexander 15, “I wish to have the ultimate Tassie foodie holiday”

Food and travel are Alexander’s all-thyme favourite hobbies. Inspired by one of his most-watched TV shows, ‘Travel Guides’, he decided he wanted to travel to Hobart, Tasmania, with his family to experience as much food-related-fun as he could!

Alexander was diagnosed with a genetic condition called neurofibromatosis (NF1) when he was just a baby and is now legally blind. But he didn’t let this stop him from experiencing a soup-er splendid wish!

After arriving in Tasmania, Alex was taken on a 2-hour VIP walking tour of the Salamanca Markets, Tasmania’s most-visited tourism attraction in Hobart’s historic Salamanca Place. Over the next few days, Alexander and his family spent time visiting as many restaurants and foodie attractions as they could, including a bakery recommended by Alexander’s doctor.

Alexander’s mum, Emily says, “Alexander’s wish has given us a lot of joy, even before we’ve come on it, because he’s been planning it for such a long time. It’s been a great thing to think about through all of the years of treatment and worry about him, that he’s got this amazing thing coming up.”

You can find Alexander's written copy here and youtube video here.

Eve

Eve, 12, “I wish for the ultimate turtle adventure on Heron Island”

Aspiring marine biologist, beach-lover, and turtle-enthusiast, Eve had one shell of a time during her wish on Heron Island. She enjoyed a snorkelling experience, which Eve’s mum, Megan recalls as one of her daughter’s happiest moments. Eve also got to spend time with the Junior Rangers, who took Eve under their wing to help her learn everything she could about turtles. And finally, together with her family, Eve witnessed the magical moment that 100 turtle hatchlings erupted out of the sand.

Originally described as a happy, bubbly, and funny young girl, Eve became quite anxious after her diagnosis, particularly in regard to her chest and liver issues. But Megan says that she thinks the wish helped Eve to feel less ashamed of her condition, and more proud.

“I think the wish will have a really positive impact on her and the way she sees her cystic fybrosis going forward.”

Artemis

Artemis 18, “I wish to have my own custom Guns N’ Roses Concert”

Due to the severity of her cerebral palsy, Artemis absolutely loves sensory activities like listening to music. Especially Guns n’ Roses! But when Artemis and her mum, Anne were unable to see the band live in concert, the Gladstone community and Make-A-Wish came together to bring the concert to them!

On the day of her wish, Artemis arrived at the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre and was escorted down a red carpet, where her friends and family blew bubbles to celebrate her entrance. She was gifted a bouquet of red roses and took time to pose with all her friends, family, and community in front of her tailor-made photo wall. Then came the concert, performed by Guns n’ Roses cover band, ‘Lies n’ Destruction’.

“It was a special moment for us give guys, all of us fathers with kids, and we could not begin to understand the challenges that Artemis, her family, friends, and carers navigate on a daily basis. So we took this way of thinking into the show... Let’s make this not only something for Artemis to remember, but for us to remember the reason why we are musicians in the first place: to bring joy and experience to people to feel the power of music.”

Audrey

Audrey 10, “I wish to build a custom pink Lego house and have a Lego minifigure of me”

Lego allows Audrey to use her imagination and creativity to build people, places, and things that bring her joy. She has always loved expressing herself through her Lego and has spent many hours watching Lego builders on YouTube! For her wish, Audrey and her family were flown to Melbourne, Victoria, where they spent the entire day at LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Melbourne.

Upon their arrival, Audrey was gifted her very own Lego minifigure from The Minifig Co., which included a zipper scar to represent the real one left on Audrey’s chest after her open-heart surgery. Audrey then met a life-sized Lego character, went for a spin on ‘Merlin’s Apprentice’ ride, and entered the ‘Creative Workshop’. This is where she was presented with her Lego dream house, which was pink, with three removable storeys, an engraved ‘Audrey’ plaque on the front, and a mermaid grotto out the back!

“I can’t thank you all enough. I’ve been extremely emotional about it all. We don’t talk about Audrey’s heart all the time, but it’s always in the back of our minds, and to experience the kindness of strangers at this magnitude, is truly overwhelming,” says Audrey’s mum, Catherine.
