Update from our artist Andrea

Remember our resident artist Andrea? This leukaemia battler is now 12 years old and in remission. Her mum sent us a beautiful update on her Andrea’s progress after her life-changing 2014 wish to be an artist.

Andrea’s treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia was a difficult time for all of us. As parents we would try anything to cheer her up, and needed encouragement to keep up our strength to support her. That’s where Make-A-Wish stepped in. When Andrea wished to be a professional artist for a day, they didn’t hesitate. They even asked the Museum of Contemporary Arts to display her art exhibition, and got Google involved to make it even more magical.

Andrea's wish gave me hope

Looking forward to Andrea’s wish gave me hope as a parent to cope with the difficult times we had, and also boosted my daughter’s morale and lifted her spirits. Every time she was in pain, I would remind her of her wish and she would start wondering how her wish day be and get excited. I could sense that hope in her voice, which I needed sometimes for myself too. Her wish day was amazing and more magical and exciting than what we expected to be, Andrea was treated like royalty!

Nothing compares to the wish

I could write pages and pages about her wish and I can’t thank Make A Wish enough for this amazing experience my daughter had and is still enjoying – Andrea has since received many offers about her art and she has big plans for the future.

Make-A-Wish gave my Andrea and family hope to last a lifetime that nothing compares to, and I will be eternally grateful to all its dedicated staff, wonderful volunteers, and donors.
– Tamar, Andrea’s mum

Andrea’s artwork now brightens The Children’s Hospital at Westmead after a generous supporter ‘purchased’ her ice cream painting through a donation to Make-A-Wish. Andrea was thrilled to see her artwork on display at the oncology ward, where she was treated, and shared, “I still love painting and will never forget my wish.”
