Celebrating 35 years of joy.
A Message from our Chairman & CEO
This November marks the anniversary of Make-A-Wish Australia, and 35 years of granting inspirational wishes in the community.
Originally founded on the 26 November 1985 at the Queen Victoria Medical Centre in Melbourne, Make-A-Wish began with a simple premise and question. If you could wish for anything, what would it be? Some 35 years on, and more than 10,000 extraordinary wishes later, it’s clear that many things in the world have changed. However, we're very pleased to say that eternal question remains at the heart of what we do. We inspire kids to think big and imagine, encouraging possibility and hope, and bringing smiles to faces during some of the toughest times.
In a year like no other, the harsh health and economic realities of COVID-19 have challenged us all and no doubt will continue to in the year ahead as we all find that elusive new normal. It’s been a year where each of us, has developed a greater appreciation of what it means to live with fear and isolation, as sadly critically ill children and their families face every single day. However, it has also been a year where many of us have also found joy in the simplest things and experienced firsthand how little things can make a big difference.
An anniversary year is always a moment to pause and reflect and also, importantly, to acknowledge those around us. For us at Make-A-Wish that means paying tribute to the truly incredible Wish Force - donors, supporters, partners, amazing volunteers and friends who inspire and help us bring extraordinary wishes to life every day of the year.
We look forward to sharing some of their stories with you in the year ahead, along with some beautiful reflections from our wish kids of the past 35 years. These very personal moments from the families themselves really do put into perspective, why wishes matter and the lasting impact wishes have.
On behalf of the entire Make-A-Wish Australia team - thank you for your unwavering support over the years and believing in the power of a wish. And, to the 800 wish kids who are currently waiting, we promise the best is yet to come.
