Letter from a wish child... 16 years on!
Christabel received a Make-A-Wish wish when she was 8. Now 24, she got in touch to share how her wish has shaped who she is today, and how she plans to give back.
A letter from Christabel...
My name is Christabel and I’m 24 years old. I was three when I was diagnosed with leukaemia, and relapsed when I was six. It was a traumatic experience, and I’m eternally grateful for the love and support I received. I have been in remission for over 10 years now.
I was eight when Make-A-Wish granted my wish to go swimming with wild dolphins. This experience brought so much joy into my life and ever since I’ve been a keen surfer and passionate about the ocean. I almost always see dolphins when I'm out in the water and I can't help but feel they’re looking out for me.
I can’t thank Make-A-Wish enough for the love, kindness and support you showed me all those years ago.
My love for dolphins and the ocean led me to volunteering in marine conservation in Fiji a couple of years ago. I’m now looking at studying art therapy for children. Art is another passion of mine (I’d always have an art book and pen in the hospital!) and I’ve always felt a calling to work with children to help bring some light and laughter into their lives.
I recently applied to volunteer at Make-A-Wish as I’d love to give back to the community and couldn't think of a better organisation to give my time and share my experiences.
I can’t thank Make-A-Wish enough for the love, kindness and support you showed me all those years ago and that you continue to give to sick children and their families.
