Fireman for a Day!
Five-year-old Rex’s wish to be a fireman for a day came true on 17 July 2012. After bravely battling leukaemia, Rex wanted nothing more than a special day to live out his dream of becoming a fireman. In a show of true community spirit, locals in the Caloundra region of Queensland – including the local Fire Brigade – rallied to make it an experience Rex will never forget.
The day began like any other for Rex, who set off to school with no knowledge of what was about to happen. Then as the school bell sounded, Rex’s school friends watched on as he got the surprise of his life. A convoy of more than 10 fire trucks arrived at the gates to take Rex to the Caloundra Fire Station where he would become an honorary fireman for the day.
As can be seen from the pictures, Rex and his family had the time of their lives. Rex met station mascot Blazer Bear, rode in the Little Toot fire truck, and was kitted out in his own uniform – as was his sister. He then put out a real fire, rode in the skylift and was flown by helicopter back to school. What a wish!
